DPF
Still Flossin' EP
Son 035 / Sep 2005
“Back again with those incredible flows/
I have my friends saying you should get a medal for those..”
Never was a truer word spoken in boast. Long overdue, but very welcome nonetheless, DPF returns with his follow up to 2003’s widely appreciated ‘Mental Floss’ EP, exhibiting more of the verbal dexterity, lyrical panache, wicked hooks and cheeky charm that made that EP such a corker.
ALL WORKED OUT
A refined slice of flute & beats, with a saucy lick of guitar produced by MR. LAWS provides the perfect frame for an engaging self-portrait painted in the third person by our host for this EP, Mr. Deepeyeff (Joe to his mates). You’ll see he’s an engaging fellow, has a certain flair with words, not to mention a surprising ability to create and sing some of the most wickedly catchy choruses. Splendid.
JELLY BELLY
From the almost serene, to the frantic sound of an MC getting real busy, we pitch things up a notch as DPF drops spitfire raps over TEMPER’s simple spacious production to maximum effect in this reworking of a track that originally appeared on ‘The Last Word’ comp released on Son earlier in the year. Techniques, styles & skills: its all here.
THE INPATIENT
A kinda semi-sequel to ‘The Outpatient’ from the last EP, this unhinged tale is pure Dr. Seuss in distilled hip-hop form. Temper creates a perfectly lurching funky soundtrack to DPF’s darkly comic postcard from the cuckoo’s nest , again topped off with one of those fishhook-like choruses..
CAN’T STOP
The welcome bonus of a tidy posse cut to round things off, featuring 3 of DPF’s rhyming friends from his neck of the woods, including EZRA (of Vinyl Dialects), TOM-TOM and MANCINI (who sneaks in and steals the show at the end with a nice line in vaguely unsettling word-pictures) alongside DPF and a monster production courtesy of Mr. Laws. There’s something happening in East Anglia, you know, and it’s all good..
