Flow Man EP
Son 045 / May 09
We’re happy to announce the welcome return to the stage of one of the most experienced and dextrous mic-manipulators out there, anywhere: the shiny metal man, Chrome, founder-member and co-front man of the venerable Def Tex crew.
If you’re not familiar with the name, check his rap sheet and you’ll see he has serious form when it comes to pretty much anything to do with hip-hop, going waay back. But that’s not important right now: what you need to know is this guy is one serious emcee, dedicated to the art of true hip-hop rhyming. A lot of people say that about themselves, but Chrome comes with that extra shine: timing, clarity, patterns, skills. Oh yeah, and he does most of his own cuts too. Not bad, eh?
Flow Man
Kicking off proceedings on a mellow tip, with some flavoursome horns ‘n beats courtesy of upcoming Leicester producer, Dise Beats, Chrome relaxes back in the groove and effortlessly convinces he is indeed the man with the flow, as he flexes his nicely constructed sustained rhyme scheme. Meanwhile, he and Dise serve up some tasty scratch interludes to sweeten the deal. A perfect platter of warm, relaxed hip-hop, totally unlike..
Bring It On (Chrome’s Version)
OK, who wants to take on our man at hip-hop karaoke? Hm? Nah, you wouldn’t, would you? In case you’re wondering how the mellow guy on the first track morphed into this aggressive sounding bloke inviting you to bring it on, in full radio-unfriendly mode, then you should know that this is a cover of a classic by the legendary Organized Konfusion. One of Chrome’s favourite-ever tunes, tt also features some of the most tongue-twistingly intricate lyrical delivery in hip-hop. So that’s why he’s gone and done it, recreating the crazy virtuoso vocal detail of Pharoah Monche and Prince Poetry’s verses, with some virtuoso syllable-flipping of his own. He’s also added his own verse, while re-creating the original production from scratch, with some nice extra touches.
Miles From Home
Chrome was indeed miles from home when making this uptempo gem: not thousands of miles, but a good few hours on the bus.. Bristol, to be precise, where he hooked up with the legendary Sir Beanz OBE and got hype. Bouncing double bass, tidy, snappy drums, a sprinkle of horns, tight cuts courtesy of Beanz, Chrome on the mic with his precision flow-man rhyming.. its all there, Originally released a couple years back as part of Beanz’ ‘Miles From Home’ EP, we thought this one was well deserving of another airing. We hope you agree.
