STYLY CEE & CAPPO
The H-Bomb EP
Son 043 / Nov 08
‘A Marathon of Pain’. ‘War Music’. A couple of the descriptions offered up by those who put together this heavier-than-uranimum slab of wax. (Styly also came up with ‘ear rape’, but we decided not to use that one cos its just too nasty and gives the wrong impression.) But you get the picture: this is hardcore, iron-clad hip-hop like you really don’t hear anymore. If, like us, you still get a thrill when you hear those opening notes of PE’s ‘Terrordome’, or remember the first time you clapped ears on Hijack’s ‘Style Wars’ from way back when, then you’re gonna get a charge from this. But don’t get it crumpled, this is no retro-fetishistic Jurassic 5-type nostalgia-by-numbers – this takes the spirit of ‘88 and innovates for 2008. Fresh, hard & heavy 21st century hip-hop by two of its finest artisans, at the top of their game and in the mood to get rugged,
The perfect 12” to mark Son’s first 10 years in business.
It feels like we only just started..
Tell Them
Two titans in their fields come together and create explosive materials. Result: devastation. Militarily precise verbal bombs from Cappo ignite all over Styly’s battle-hardened breaks and armageddon atmospherics. It’s like a musical air-raid, and its all going-off.. Not for the faint-hearted, or the badly hungover.
Time Will Tell
Cappo reflects on his legacy, 10 years of crushed-glass classics.. What’s it worth? Who’s to say until the credits roll, but on this evidence, posterity will take care of itself. Head-cracking drums and doom-laden guitar fuel Styly’s sledgehammer production. Cappo kills it on the mic. If this track was given physical form, it’d be a tank. And a really big, scary one to boot. And if this track were a boot, it’d be a steel-toed, rusty hob-nailed one. Heading for your nuts.
Unwritten Rule
The original demo title for this was ‘Futurist Cap-Core’ which sums it up nice. Styly scares up a killer chopped breakbeat, deep sub drops, eerie sonics and hectic scratches to set the scene for Cappo to wield words like a ginsu and deliver some of the most direct, powerful and personal lines of the whole EP. Always precise, potent and quotable, here Caps mind-melds with the turbo-charged beat and creates line after line of coded, rugged poetics, while also offering succinct and sage life advice as he recounts his journey.
