It'll Never Catch On
Son CD042 / June 2008

“I wish i had one of those faces, y’know the type of face that goes places..”

“well, sorry Joe mate, but you don’t - that’s why we’ve put a picture of a big gorilla on the front of the album. And besides, even if you did, it probably wouldn’t make a bollock of difference. I mean, just cos you’ve put together a little gem of an album, full of intricate, literate rhymes, delivered with heaps of personality and wit, that doesn’t count for much these days.. And it doesn’t really work coming off like a seasoned mc with crazy skills.. It’d be far better if you sounded like you just started rapping last week, that’s what the kids love.. Y’know just shout the same word at the end of each line for 12 bars, and then do that again 3 times.. That’ll work.”

“but-“

“and don’t even get me started on that flashes-of-insight/personal reflection-type stuff you keep dropping into tracks. You think the world wants to know what type of person you are, what you’re thinking about?? Forget it mate, start a blog or something. If you’re doing hip-hop, don’t confuse ‘em - keep it simple, keep it roadman.”

“but what about all my catchy hooks? All my mates say they keep humming ‘em. Y’reckon they might play a couple of tracks on 1xtra?”

“joe, i hate to break it to you, but you’re from Norfolk. Probably best to lower your expectations a bit..”

“yeah, but Frank & Tommy came through big-time on the production. It all sounds so fresh compared to the other stuff i’m hearing. That’s gotta be good, right?”

“fair enough, but who d’they know? They mates with any of them big dogs on the radio..or anywhere else? Nah, well there you go then. Face it Joe, you’re gonna have to get yourself banged up for force feeding crack to cats or something, and then do a confessional on your blog explaining how it wasn’t you, it was the aliens living in your fridge … we’ll get some sort of y’know, George Galloway/David Icke-type vibe going, set up a facebook group and see if we can’t get a bit of a buzz started.. If it all works out, maybe we’ll be able to get you on Celebrity Big-Brother year after next.. What d’ya reckon?

“um..”
