DEF TEX
Run EP
Son 039 / May 2007

As a prelude to the long overdue new album from East Anglian hip-hop legends, Def Tex, we’re proud to bring you a selection of 4 prime cuts that should whet your appetite but also serve as a meaty, wholesome meal in its own right. Possibly the only hip-hop group in the world who are still going strong after over 20 years together, the 4 tracks on offer here amply demonstrate the band’s maturity, both musically and lyrically and serves as a reminder of how powerful this music can be when its done right.

Run (featuring DPF)
Possibly the finest slice of narrative pulp fiction since Slick Rick’s ‘Children’s Story’ this is the cautionary tale of how a small-timer on the fringes of the underworld gets caught up in a spiralling cycle of violence and retribution that can only end badly. It’s a small, seedy and ultimately sad tale, but musically its an epic - while the Def Tex emcees, Chrome & The Anthropologist, (joined here by fellow EA native & superstar-in-waiting, DPF) effortlessly weave in & out of the narrative, the band let rip with a powerhouse performance that should give you a little taste of the impact of their live performances.

Time Lord
After the anthemic opener, here’s a little bit of a breather.. Featuring the sublime deckskills of Def Tex’s masterful DJ, Sure Delight and DJ Tags (from EA’s top-notch turntablist crew, The Fully Grown Men) laid over some high-grade future-funk production courtesy of Sure Delight & Charlie King.

Thanks But No Thanks
A blistering diatribe against the epidemic of mindless consumption and ‘no strings’ credit that runs riot in our times. Also an uptempo bass-bin-bothering monster of a track. Not a combination you come across that often, but that’s Def Tex for you.

Bomber
Rounding things off, the band fuse their trademark gnarly, punky funk with the spirit of Rhubarb & Custard to create the ultimate riposte to those who confuse the art of hip-hop with the art of trying to look hard and pissed-off. Rousing, rowdy and more than a little off-kilter. Humpty-Hump would be proud.
