DEF TEX
Freaks EP
Son 032 / Feb 2005
So they’re from Norfolk – that doesn’t mean they’re FREAKS, OK? It’s just that some of the people they know are.. The latest bulletin from the East Anglian chapter of the Zulu Nation features tales of gurning, soundclashes, pharmaceuticals, speed cameras, bales of hay, village idiots, scoops of bass, and plenty of freaks. All delivered with the lyrical & musical panache that’ll have them slick city folk scratching thar heads like yokels..
FREAKS
The first of 2 tunes on this EP that is not really like anything you can remember hearing. This is the sound of a rejuvenated Def Tex, fully taking advantage of their strength as a live band, new band members Rob (bass), Steve (drums) & Chris (keyboards) adding their sachets of spicy goodness into the big Def Tex pot noodle.. While the band hold it down with a big stomping groove laced with some cannily placed minimal melody, emcees CHROME and THE ANTHROPOLOGIST twist tongues & drop narrative in perfectly interweaving parallel tales of a big Saturday night, and the highs & lows therein.
FALLING
After the freneticism of the A, the B comes with a ‘works best in hammocks’ label. This is emcee Chrome’s first Def Tex production, and it’s a corker. Deep, warm, heavy bottom end, musicality, and Chrome’s inimitable dextrous verbals tell the tale of freshly stirred love. Is it his girl? Is it the music? Doesn’t really matter. And its all topped off with some fine cuts (Chrome again). See, these Def Tex boys are proper all-rounders..
VILLAGE IDIOT (feat. DANDELION)
And as if to prove the point, the Anthropologist picks up the production baton and serves up this rural hip-hop widescreen masterpiece: incongruous isn’t even the word.. Perhaps the most unlikely collision of styles and influences you could hope to hear. Anthro tells a tale of childhood, self-expression, unlikely scenarios, b-boy boasts... And combine-harvesters. And yet it works an absolute treat, you’ll be amazed. Graced with a wicked guest vocal from talented newcomer, Dan D. Lion.
