DEF TEX
Synchronise EP
Son 013 / Jan 2000
Messing your head up for the millenium, we bring you the return of the 4 man crew from Norwich, who lit up the lives of legions of true hip-hop believers everywhere last year with their ’Poetic Speech Techniques’ EP. This time around emcees CHROME and ANTHOPOLOGIST get the chance to drop their unique poetics over some truly mad-scientifical creations from producer R-KEY, while a guest spot from DPF, and ever-precise cuts from SURE DELIGHT combine to make this a treat for anyone looking for that raw b-boy bizniz on a different level.
SYNCHRONISE
Like the soundtrack to the Terminator’s birthday party, this monster of a track rumbles along while the three-times-dope tag team of CHROME, DPF (Chrome’s partner in rhyme in Def Tex affiliated group Freeform) and ANTHROPOLOGIST deliver a slew of intricately constructed rhymes that’ll have abstract heads and true school B-boys alike stroking their chin and going for the rewind. Purposeful, powerful, poetic. And if you listen to this twice, you’ll have that chorus floating around your head for weeks.
WRITTEN RESPONSE
This is especially for those of you who like their hip-hop nice’n’ straight up. Boom-bip, and a little funky rhyme. Cos this is nothing like that. Unless very strange things start happening in Y2K, you are unlikely to hear anything more bugged-out than this all year. Producer R-KEY excels himself with a Frankenstein-like re-assembly of a collection of dislocated basslines, sound effects and bugged-out beats - all topped off with killer cuts and verses. Sounding like the aftermath of a jazz massacre, this is chaos theory hip-hop.
OBSCURE JOURNEY
Bringing things back down to earth on the flip, the boys return to the scene of their last crowd-moving rump shaker, ‘Rare Ride’ from the ‘Poetic Speech Techniques’ EP, and flip the break to bring you this sequel. Complete with super bouncy bassline and ruff drums, CHROME and ANTHRO get right in amongst the beat and tear it up in an uptempo abstract kinda style. As summarised by always-tight SURE DELIGHT on the cut-up chorus: ‘Perfection.’
