QUAKES
Capital Visions EP
Son 003 / June 1998
Quakes’ second single, following up his critically rated debut ‘Rennaissance Man’, is a four-tracker once again showcasing his smooth-but-deadly style over three very different productions.
First up, Mad Doctor X comes correct with the summer sound of funky flute loops and deep bottom ends while Quakes holds forth on the drop-top hip-hop antics of a lyrical loose cannon running amok on the streets of the City of Dungeons. No fights, no Tennants Extra: strictly stunts, blunts & hip-hop. *
Next up, our hero finds himself facing bogus charges ‘In A Court’. Nahh man, it won’t stick. True to form the Teflon Don walks tall and shows the best form of defence is offence, as the disses come thick and fast over some serious sub-bass and a string sample that goes for the hairs on the back of your neck (and turns them white).
B-side bizniz comes courtesy of Q and Lee Curtis, who manages the unlikely feat of taking the hardcore vocal of ‘In A Court’ and turning it into a warm, funky headnodder. Satisfyingly large bassline, ruff drums, killer lyrics. AND an instrumental. Happy? You should be.
JAM ALERT: CATCH QUAKES AT HIP-HOP ALL DAYER MAY 17TH AT THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY CENTRE, NOTTINGHAM, ALONGSIDE JURASSIC 5, CUT CHEMIST AND SON RECORDS’ LOST ISLAND.
