LOST ISLAND
Mic Life EP
Son 002 / May 1998

The second release on SON Records follows in the footsteps of the first release by Quakes, but definitely takes its own path. Maintaining SON’s commitment to providing a platform for the next generation of their-name-on-a-label-makes-you-buy-the-tune-type producers and emcees. this time up its a crew from Nottingham called LOST ISLAND. They are producer/emcee/DJ STYLY CEE whose supachunky remix on the Quakes 12 got the props last time round and master of the hyperbolic battle rhyme, original boogie boy, FRISCO.

Musically, producer (and occasional emcee) Stylz brings the skilz once again, showing his versatility with the fat track format, going from the bright, summertime (but definitely rugged) grooves of ‘Mic Life’ and ‘Countdown’ to the out-and-out nuttiness of ‘Raining All Over The World’, to the demonstration of pure deck-related bizniz on ‘Don’t Make No Sense’. And don’t **** with his ice-cream.

Crispy beats, catchy hooks, cuts to make you do that funky air-scratching thing when no-ones watching, its all there. So what about the emceeing? Step up front, Frisco. Believe me, you haven’t heard lyrics like this before: battle rhymes like they used to kick on Mount Olympus back in the day. At times sicker than a whole doctor’s waiting room, Frisco gets mythological on your behinds, and then goes and shows he’s got a heart of gold too. What can you do? You can listen to the record for starters. Lost Island: Frisco and Stylz, the dynamic duo. Nuff said.
