QUAKES
Renaissance Man EP
Son 001 / Feb 1998
This is the first 12” on new label, SON Records, and is a statement of intent, setting the agenda for future releases. The label aims to introduce the next generation of underground hip-hop stars, and refresh those fans of hip-hop who have grown bored with the formulaic lyrical and musical approach of the vast majority of emcees and producers.
This 6 track 12” features throughout a straight-up demonstration of hip-hop skills: on ‘Rennaissance Man’ Quakes raps with wit and intelligence about the state of hip-hop today, reminiscent of OC’s milestone ‘Time’s Up’. Remixed by original B-kid, Styly Cee, the track is the perfect combination of dope beats and fly lyrics to make ya granny rock. ‘Fat Track Format’ has one of the deepest basslines you’re going to hear all year (on the original mix), and plenty of other musical surprises can be found on the 2 extra mixes by Styly Cee, and DJ Life, from the up-and-coming UK production crew, Beats In Progress. All in all, even if we do say so ourselves, this is a good value 12”: all styles represented, all tastes catered for.
