R.I.P. Edward Woodward

We feel compelled to write a short note on the sad passing of the great Edward Woodward last Monday.

We know it's not what you might expect to be reading about here at the world's finest UK hip-hop label, but for us, Mr. Woodward was a great icon. Anyone in possession of either of the first 2 Pitman albums will see him peeking out from the clouds underneath the CD, and this was our small way of giving him a fond shout-out.

Aside from the great Callan, he gave us the one and only Robert McCall - The Equalizer: friend to the helpless, nemesis of criminal scum everywhere. In the world of fictional heroes, no-one comes close to the coolness of the sturdy English gentleman, of a certain vintage, with the leather gloves and well-cut overcoat (not to mention the Jag with the fog machine built on), striding through NY's seedy underworld, despatching evildoers left, right and centre - sometimes with no more than a terrifying stare and some well-chosen stern words, but more often than not with a  sound duffing-up..

For this alone we salute him. But we also understood him to be a sincere and humble person of great character. Edward Woodward, you shall be missed. Respect.

PS: we shall always remember the time Mark (The Anthropologist) from Def Tex told the Edward Woodward joke ('Why does he have so many 'D's in his name?') and ended with the punchline: "Cos otherwise he'd be Ewar Woowoo"... woowoowould he?
