SHOW IN SHOP “The story of Chrome goes like this: I started breaking in 1983 after seeing the ‘Buffalo Girls’ video on top of the pops, realised that I was pretty wack so I started rhyming in 1984 at the tender age of 9. After listening to 'Sucker MCs' for the first time I knew that this thing called Hip-Hop was going to be with me for the rest of my life. Me and my brother moved to Norwich when I was ten and we started making tracks, pause mixing on a double tape deck using breaks off 'The History of Hip-Hop'. Even though the quality was ruff this was the early blueprint for what was to be the Def Tex sound. We met up with DJ Sure Delight and started performing. One of my favourite memories was winning the Brixton Illin' Rap Clash at the Fridge in 1988. After winning this competition, Def Tex went on to support acts like BDP, De La Soul, 3rd Bass, Cash Money and Marvelous, and the list goes on. In 1989 we got signed by Ten Records (subsidiary of Virgin) most famous for Soul II Soul, Mantronix, T La Rock etc. Nothing was released on Ten but we went on to release our own stuff with new recruit 'The Anthropologist' on local label Soundclash Records. With several releases under our belt we moved on to bigger things with our first release on London based Hip-Hop label Son Records.”
Since then Chrome has gone to release a slew of EPs and two critically-acclaimed LPs and performed shows up and down the country and round Europe as part of Def Tex; promoted numerous events in Norwich including pretty much every UK act going, as well as Kool Herc, Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money, & many more; won an award for ‘Programmer of the Year’ from the nationwide music college A2M; performed round the country and in Europe as a solo artist, including as support for Jurassic 5 and Slum Village amongst others, set up his own label, Homework Records, through which he’s already released his own self-produced album, and is now working on further releases with other artists, as well as more material of his own under the guise ‘Nerve Troubles’. Paid his dues or what?
